Male Survey - That's What He Said

That's What He Said Survey - Part I

Thats What He Said Art_0.gif

Relationships between young men and women has changed tremendously over the past 20 years. We have moved from dating, courting, and escorting to hook ups, friends with benes, and jump offs. The mindset of preteens, teens, and young men has been altered by environment, gaps in parenting, and a changing set of society morals. Yet young girls and ladies are asked to look for the same traits and characteristics in a "man". Likewise the behaviors and mindset of young women has also changed creating new types of interaction and standards of what is cool, appropriate or risky behavior. Most females think they know how men think. This survey gives men a chance to share their thoughts on a wide variety of areas in dealing with the opposite sex.

Here are some key terms in the survey:

Sex: Vaginal intercourse, sometimes called “making love,” “having sex”, or “going all the way”.

Hook-up/hooking-up: A “no strings attached,” “no expectations,” intimated physical encounter, which may or may not include sex.

Casual dating: A physical and emotional relationship, may or may not include sex, but not exclusive or committed.

Serious relationship: A physical and emotional relationship, may or may not include sex; exclusive, committed, significant, call each other boyfriend/girlfriend.

Birth Control: Anything used to prevent pregnancy; common examples may include a condom, the pill, the patch, vaginal ring, diaphragm, spermicide, etc.

That's What He Said - Part II

To better understand what guys think about these issues, The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and Seventeen magazine developed and commissioned a survey of 1,200 boys and men ages 15-22. (Complete methodology, glossary of terms, and data summary can be found beginning on page 7.) The survey results presented in That’s What He Said shed light on what guys think—and how they behave—when it comes to love, sex, contraception, relationships, unplanned pregnancy, and related issues. Too often, discussions about guys’ responsibility don’t happen until it’s time to buy diapers. We asked about their attitudes and actions pertaining to romance and relationships in order to paint a more complete picture and encourage more informed conversation.

E3 has partnered with the Duval County Health Department and AMT Productions, Inc. to gather responses from young men in Northeast Florida. The group will create a number of events to hold dialogue on the survey and encourage its completion by males aged 13 - 23 years. The results will be analyzed by the Duval County Health Department and shared with local community partners.

61% of guys would rather have sex with someone who is “super hot” than with someone who is
“smart and funny.”

But 78% would rather be in a relationship with someone who
is smart and funny than someone who is super hot.
